The latest June driver updates are meant to reduce the instance of the Sleep of Death issue but there have been reports that this is not a 100 % fix. Switching over to an active adapter: Some users have reported that making the switch from passive adapters to active adapters for dual displays fixed the issue for them. I have been told from a W10 dev this has been fixed in the Anniversary update.

The issue with hibernation and Windows 10 at the moment, is that if you resume from hibernation there are a fair few performance bugs, so your SB will take a performance hit and be very choppy and laggy. Ideally, if the laptop has been asleep 120 minutes then it should have entered into hibernation in which you have to press the power button to resume. This was one of the causes of the Sleep of Death where the SB and SP4 would cold start from the crash. The problem was/is that the SB and SP4 would crash when it transitioned from sleep to hibernate. You can turn this off in the old control panel power settings.

It doesn't necessarily mean every "black screen" potential vector has been fixed, but most of them should be at this point, so upgrade if you can! :)īy default the SB is set to hibernate after 120 minutes of sleep automatically. Of note, the 1203 firmware released yesterday for Book and Pro4 should make the power state of the device even more stable and fix a good amount of the "black screen" issues some people have been running into that were related to "hot bagging", but caused by other problems with the device that should be fixed.

This is actually the behavior that caused "hot bagging", because the device was not allowed to enter S0ix properly due to an application or service on the device, causing it to look like it was in "Modern Standby", but actually draining far more power stuck in an attempt to get from an S0-S3 state to S0ix, and draining (potentially) far more power and generating a good amount of heat as the CPU tries again and again and again to get to it's assigned power state.
When in this state, after a default of 2 hours of not being woken up to an active (S0) state, the device will hibernate (which is the S4 power state) and thus when you open the lid after this time, the device will not power on without a power button press. In the "deep sleep" (what intel calls "drip") state, it means that the device is on, but only parts of the chipset are on, and they're in a "sort of on, sort of off" state all the time. The Surface Book (and Pro4) are Skylake devices that support (and by default only support) use of set of power states, with one of them behaving as if it was between traditional S3 and S4 (even if all of these are somewhere in the S0 state range) - these states are called S0ix (google it if you want the nitty gritty details on Skylake and power).
